“Disappearing golf balls” is not a hazard most golf courses would advertise, but Caverns Country Club in Luray, VA, is not most golf courses. Located just a few miles from the famous natural landmark and tourist destination, the Luray Caverns, Caverns Country Club has a few “caves” of its own, the most notable one in the middle of the par 5 first hole, which the club is proud to call “The Cave Hole.”
On large tracts of local land on the limestone bluffs in the Luray area, such cave openings are not unusual. And according to Caverns golf course officials, there are a half dozen or more such cave holes along the course. In other words, bring plenty of golf balls just in case.
The setting for the golf course is dramatic and will cause many golfers to look up at the Shenandoah and Blue Ridge Mountains when they might be better advised to look down at their golf ball. (Don’t worry, the openings are well marked, the golfers well warned.). The beautiful setting for the golf course is mirrored by the adjacent homesites, virtually all of them with majestic views and easy access to the clubhouse and first tee. And those homeowners lucky enough to live and play at Caverns Country Club receive an extra bonus; any player who knocks a ball into a cave gets a free drop.
